My Bullmastiff puppy hides when he sees his harness.?
I have a beautiful Bullmastiff puppy very well behaved,but when we go to take him for a walk he sees his harness and tries to hide.He is fine once we leave the house,he's happy to be outside and walking.But for some reason he hides as soon as he sees the harness.Does anyone have any advice?
the actual purpose of a harness is to keep strain off the dog's throat which is a very good idea especially for a large dog like a mastiff. what i would recommend is to try to teach him to associate the harness with something good. for example call him over (with the harness close but out of sight) and give him lots of praise and attention accompanied by a treat then introduce the harness, slowly work the harness into the picture to be more and more visible so that he will associate it with the happy event of being loved and given treats. don't be discouraged if he bolts the first few times when he see the harness emerge. it will probably be a very slow process but he will eventually learn that there is nothing to be afraid of. the ultimate goal in all of this is that you can call him with the harness in your hand and he will come to you instead of hiding. once you have reached that stage you can slowly work treats out of the picture but always keep up the praise and attention. remember that he is still a puppy and these are simply things that must be taight over time. it is nothing to worry over.
