Conflating the Big Stuff

A friend of mine in New York sent me a weepy email today, lamenting last night’s stunning Red Sox victory. “It just seems like the world is out of wack. Is the sun still setting in the west?”

But for those of us in Red Sox Nation, the stars have never been so perfectly aligned.

In fact (and I’ve really struggled with whether to post this here) I’m now pinning John Kerry's hopes of winning the White House on the back of his hometown team.

Look, people have already compared the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry to the Republicans and Democrats. They had their convention in New York, ours was in Boston. Cheney’s turned up at Yankees games. Giuliani is now stumping for Bush. Yankees are nicknamed the Evil Empire, etc., etc.

Looking forward, I’m rooting for the Astros to make the World Series, so our shaggy bunch of idiots can trounce Bush’s home-state team.

As a sidenote, I worry that if we play St. Louis, Kerry will be forced to stump in Missouri claiming he’s not sure who he wants to win the Series, proving once again that he’s got no backbone. (Even though I believe he does.)

The point is, put a Kerry button on your Red Sox hat and cowboy up; it’s time to start believing.
