The Smear Machine Keeps Turning

It was reported that the RNC has been sending flyers to West Virginia voters admonishing them that if they vote Democrat, bibles will be banned and gay marriage will be allowed.

The Washington Note has turned up a copy from Arkansas as well. Here's the image.

RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie claims he doesn’t know anything about it, but demurs: "It wouldn't surprise me if we were mailing voters on the issue of same-sex marriage."

How odd, because just last night Marc Racicot, chairman of the Bush re-election campaign, stated in the Daily Show that the remainder of the Bush campaign would stay positive and clean, focusing on the issues. I guess what I'm saying was that I didn't know Bible-banning was an issue, considering, you know, Kerry is a Catholic and all.

In fact, when has any candidate or political party ever argued to ban the bible?

Seriously, does anyone know when this straw man first poked his little straw head onto the political scene?
